With Our Town, a cultural heritage app created by West Virginia’s Collaborative for the 21st Century Appalachia®, digital storytelling is not a clash of oppositions but a beautiful fusion of cutting-edge technology with old traditions. Our Town content packs consist of photographs, videos, audio recordings, and text that provide a dynamic and personal way to experience cultural heritage. Users are not limited to cultural heritage institutions such as museums and historic sites—Our Town enables communities to share their own stories by creating and contributing content packs for the app.
The app features the ability to search for information in various ways and is integrated with the map feature to enable users to easily locate an artifact or access directions to a particular site.
Content currently available through Our Town includes History of the Greenbrier, a storied and historic resort nestled among the Allegheny Mountains since 1778; Unique Places to Dine in West Virginia; West Virginia Highway Historical Markers; and FFA Agricultural Heritage, agricultural history essays and photographs contributed by local students through the West Virginia Future Farmers of America Association.
Our Town can help folks preserve their local heritage, keep it vibrant, and bring visitors and their spending power to the table to share all that is fascinating and special about their community.
